Abilene author’s children’s book stresses the importance of education

By Glenn Dromgoole

Abilene author Elayne Palmer draws on her experience as a teacher living in the Middle East to write a children’s book, Jameel’s Plan, about a boy in a refugee camp who is distraught when the soldiers close his school.

His parents have always stressed to him the importance of getting a good education, so when the school is closed, Jameel comes up with an idea of how he and his friends can continue to learn.

“Sometimes,” the book says, “all it takes is one inquisitive mind to inspire change.”

Copies of Jameel’s Plan are available at Texas Star for $12.99.

Tom Motley: Tom Motley of Fort Worth is well known in the Abilene arts community as an artist, teacher, and friend, and now he is an author as well. He’ll sign copies of his new novel, The Art of Farming: Sketches of Life in the Country – which he also illustrated — on Saturday, November 23, from 1-3 p.m. at Texas Star. Judy Deaton, curator at The Grace Museum, says, “Motley’s tale of a rural Renaissance on a Texas farm enchants and transforms you to a realm that combines art history with a treatise on organic gardening.”

Amanda Moore Vingren: Cindy Ella is a delightful new children’s book, a West Texas version of the familiar Cinderella story, set at the Cowboy Christmas Ball. Author Amanda Moore Vingren, who grew up in Roby, will be at Texas Star to sign copies on November 29, the Friday after Thanksgiving, from 1-3 p.m. The book doubles as a coloring book, inviting children to participate in telling the story.
