Lisa Wingate in Abilene for book signing
Lisa Wingate will be in Abilene on Thursday, Oct. 17, to sign copies of her newest novel, Shelterwood. She’ll be at the store from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., so please stop by and say hello. Lisa has a good following among Abilene readers. She’s been featured at the West Texas Book Festival, the library’s Texas Author Series, the Abilene Woman’s Club, and, of course, at Texas Star Trading over the years.
The story features three heroines – an 11-year-old girl who runs away from an abusive stepfather in 1909 and fights to help other homeless children survive; a single mother working as a national park law enforcement officer in 1990; and a nearly forgotten real-life figure from history – Kate Barnard, the first woman elected to statewide office in Oklahoma in 1907.
Lisa weaves their experiences together into a tale that exposes greed, corruption, violence, and pervasive child abuse among rich and powerful forces at both ends of the 20th century – themes also prevalent in the award-winning book and movie, Killers of the Flower Moon, set in Oklahoma in the 1920s.
Fellow best-selling novelist Lisa Scottoline says of Shelterwood: “A seamlessly crafted tale of tragedy, resilience, and triumph, this powerful novel needs to go to the top of your list. Lisa Wingate once again gives poignant voice to the ‘lost’ children of American history.”
Other effusive reviews: “Lisa Wingate’s best book yet!” “Chilling story of children displaced by land barons.” “An instant American classic!” “There is no finer storyteller at work today than Lisa Wingate.”
Lisa is a personal friend of ours, going back more than 20 years when her first novel, Tending Roses, came out. We were so excited when her 2017 novel Before We Were Yours hit the New York Times Bestseller list for a full year in hardback and then another year or so in paperback. Here’s hoping for a repeat with Shelterwood.
