Off They Went: Abilene Women Who Defied the Times and Took to the  Skies

By Loretta Fulton

A new book by Abilene author Fulton tells the story of Abilene women who dared to take to the skies. Even though the Ninety-Nines, an organization of women pilots, had been active since World War II, it was still a rarity for a woman to fly a plane. In 1957, the Ninety-Nines issued a charter to an Abilene group to form a local chapter. The stories of the original members are told in the pages of  “Off They Went,” and also includes a chapter on a second wave of Ninety-Nines pilots who formed a local group in the 1980s. Charter members featured in the book include Ruby Caldwell Kinard, Ann Nell Hooks, Beverly Tarpley, Maxine Elam, Jo Ann Elliott, Margaret Childs, Patty Taliaferro, Mozelle Scarborough and Amber Cree.
