"Wildcat Football: Three Cheers for the Purple and White"
by Lance Fleming
“Wildcat Football: Three Cheers for the Purple and White” by Lance Fleming is a handsome full-color history of Abilene Christian University football, beginning in 1919 up to the present. Published by ACU Press, the book is much more than a simple chronological history, but rather a collection of interesting stories concerning the lore and legend of Wildcat football.
The Singing Christians played and sang their way to an undefeated season in 1950… Wilbert Montgomery set all kinds of records at ACU en route to the College Football Hall of Fame… Ove Johansson kicked the longest field goal in college football history in 1976… ACU won two national championships in five years in the 1970s.
The book also focuses on how ACU football has helped shape young men into loving husbands, fathers and civic leaders. Four other writers – Dr. Charlie Marler, Garner Roberts, Ron Hadfield, and Grant Boone – contributed stories, as well as longtime coach and athletic director Wally Bullington.
