Legacy, Jay Moore’s impressive book, tells the story of the Dodge Jones Foundation and the generous family who made it possible.

Ruth Legett Jones and her daughter, Judy Matthews, were the driving forces behind the foundation, founded in 1954 and named in memory of Mrs. Matthews’ brother.

“The Foundation existed from 1954 until 2018,” Moore writes, “but the story begins well before and will doubtless extend far into the future.

Legacy is a combination human tale, family tale, and the tale of a city,” he says. “Since the beginning of Abilene, Texas, in 1881, the Jones-Legett-Matthews family has continuously expressed their hometown passion by quietly transforming the city and improving the lives of its citizens.”

The 160-page coffee table book, filled with family and community photographs, is divided into two sections. The first focuses on the family members and their triumphs, tragedies, and especially their generosity. The second section examines the impact the Dodge Jones Foundation has had on so many Abilene institutions – improving the quality of life, supporting health care, benefiting churches and schools, and preserving and beautifying Abilene.

Autographed copies of the $40 book are available now at Texas Star Trading Company. Proceeds from the book will benefit the Abilene Heritage Square project.

12×10 hardcover, 160 pages. Color and black-and-white photography.
