By Ellen Webb, a Texas original. She learned to cook while growing up on the family farm in Mexia, Texas, and fine-tuned her cooking skills while living in Albany, Texas, and later Abilene, Texas. Ellen passed away at age 98 in August, 2019, and was still collecting recipes until her last days.
Now in its sixth printing, this cookbook is filled to the brim with down-home, delicious recipes. Ellen shares recipes for a variety of mouth-watering delights — from Green Chile and Cheese Squares and her Famous Pickles to Fried Chicken, Tamale Pie and complete instructions for preparing Turkey and Cornbread Dressing. Other tried and true recipes include Mr. McGregor’s Garden Vegetable Salad, Fried Okra and White Bean and Chicken Chili. Ellen might be best known for pies and other sweets — she gives us recipes for Chocolate Chess Pie, Jeff Davis Pie, Peach Cobbler, Italian Cream Cake, Five-Flavored Pound Cake, her famous Peppermint Ice Cream, Meringue cookies and Microwave Peanut Brittle, among many others.
The cookbook is filled with anecdotes and testimonials from family and friends.
