Long Live the Matadors: The Fearless History of Texas Tech’s Masked Rider
By Stacy Stockard Caliva
On New Year’s Day in 1954, a new tradition was born. Texas Tech University appeared in a bowl game, trouncing Auburn, but more importantly, the Red Raiders were led onto the field by a masked man on horseback.
Joe Kirk Fulton, donning a mask and wearing custom chaps, charged onto the field on horseback, leading the team and establishing the Masked Rider, a mascot and public figure whose role continues to this day.
The Masked Rider is a quintessential piece of Texas Tech history. There have been more than 60 riders, and in addition to making appearances at football games, travel many miles and make hundreds of appearances on behalf of Texas Tech.
This beautiful coffee table-style book traces the fascinating history of one of the most majestic and recognizable college mascot programs. The book is filled with color and black-and-white photographs, along with an extensive graphic of horse bloodlines and a complete list of masked riders through the years.
The 242-page book measures 12×10 inches and will be a handsome addition to your library. Priced at $29.95, the book was underwritten by The Helen Jones Foundation.
